Going Viral by Accident:
What I Learned from a TikTok Surprise
Last week, I posted a casual TikTok video that took off in ways I never expected. Views skyrocketed over 1000%; engagement too. I even nearly doubled my followers in the first few days. All this from a simple video where I shared my thoughts on a popular TikToker's content. It seems I tapped into her audience’s interests, sparking curiosity and conversation that spilled over into my older videos, too.
This unexpected virality has been a game-changer for me.
I usually shy away from talking head videos, preferring to stay behind the camera. But the response has been so positive and encouraging that I’ve decided to lean into this new approach. I've already posted a couple more off-the-cuff videos, and I’m enjoying the authentic connection with my audience—something that feels far more engaging than a scripted performance.

What’s most exciting is how this shift might expand my reach beyond TikTok.
While I don’t have a formula for going viral, I see that being loose, flexible, and spontaneous can never hurt. Who knows? The engagement from TikTok might just flow over to Substack, growing our Aging Like a Badass community here too.
