Another Monday morning mortality moment
In a Note I published earlier today, I shared some vulnerable truths about my body’s condition and the ticking clock of life. Pain and fear often go hand in hand, making the pain-free moments all the more precious. As I said in the Note, at least I’m having an excellent hair day.
Choosing celebration over complaint
This morning was chilly enough to think about wearing a wool sweater. To my surprise, I found a lightweight Smartwool sweater I didn't remember buying in my dresser. Must've been a summer thrift store score that I tucked away for cooler days — nice surprise. The fit’s perfect, which makes me really happy. I think I had a smile on my face for the entire first half of my morning walk.
I stopped at the local café and astonished myself by ordering herbal tea. I never ever go herbal! I drink an iced black tea/lemonade mix that I order extremely specifically. But not today. If you know me you know how wildly unusual this is. I'm guessing it's because I'm so keenly aware of my body’s condition, guiding me to make radically different and hopefully nurturing/nourishing choices.
Another moment of pleasure to celebrate
Back at home, I received a package in the mail: a barn jacket from L.L. Bean that I found on eBay for under $40. I bought it a size larger to layer over my favorite sweaters, and I nailed it. Who knew that taking fashion cues from Tim Walz could lead to such a delightful discovery?
Even when I'm staring mortality in the face, I realize I have choice. I can focus on the pain, or I can celebrate the simple pleasures that life offers—like a sweater that fits just right, a snazzy barn jacket, or a soothing cup of herbal tea.
There's always a choice.
You can complain or you can celebrate.
Hard to do both at the same time. Go ahead, try it.
